Transformation of the Day: Charmayne lost 104 pounds. As her busy life evolved with marriage, advancing in her career, launching a nonprofit, and having a baby, she lost focus on herself and gained 100 lbs. She reprioritized her health by having VSG surgery, adopting a low carb, pescatarian diet, and working out consistently.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
I’ve struggled with my weight my entire life. In 2010, I started my weight loss journey. When I got married in 2015, I was the smallest I had ever been as an adult, weighing in at 225 pounds. Of course, life happened—I got married, started advancing in my career, launched my nonprofit, hosted events, had a baby—and I was saying yes to everyone, BUT me!
I was so focused on everyone else but myself that I gained 100 pounds. I looked at a picture someone took of me and didn’t recognize myself. After seeing that photo, I decided that I had to prioritize my health and wellness.
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
In August 2019, I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy to aid me in managing my portion control. Other than portion control, I did not have any restrictions on my food choices. I attended nutrition classes, went to counseling to break up my relationship with food. I had to make healthy food choices so I could lose the weight I desired.
How did you change your eating habits?
I am a Pescatarian and live a high protein, low carb lifestyle. I’m not much of a food tracker. I do intuitive eating and, throughout the day, I prioritize protein first, vegetables second, fruit third, and then carbs.
What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
I work out five times per week doing strength training, HIIT (high-intensity interval training), and cardio. I like working out in the mornings because that allows me to start the day off right, and I’m motivated to make wise food choices.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 324 pounds. I am currently 220 pounds.
What is your height?
I am 5’7”
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I started making food choice adjustments in July 2019. Then I added exercise in March 2020 during the pandemic.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
This journey starts with your mindset. If you start your weight loss journey thinking you’re just going to lose weight for an event or a trip (or something short-term), then you’ll stop afterward and gain the weight back.
If you shift your mindset, identify your triggers for eating unhealthy foods/beverages, and become determined to make a complete lifestyle change for overall wellness, then your actions will follow.
What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
Be consistent. Whatever you do to lose weight, you also have to do to maintain the weight you’ve lost. There is no quick fix to a lifestyle change. Be patient with yourself to get the results you desire. In time, your body will thank you.
Take plenty of pictures along your journey. The scale may not always move the way you want, but pictures will allow you to see your progress.
