Transformation of the Day: Jasmine lost 85 pounds. Simple tasks became difficult for her, and she felt like she let herself go physically and mentally. She invested in a trainer and changed her eating habits, eventually becoming a Pescatarian.
What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
I hated who I had become. I let myself go physically and mentally. I did not like the Jasmine I would see in the mirror. I remember getting on my knees, trying to wash my son in the tub, and it was difficult. I remember being out of breath from making small body movements. All of this made me determined to change my life. I wanted to fall back in love with Jasmine.
When I wanted to give up, I reminded myself that the only person stopping me from creating the image and life I wanted IS ME! I began to fall in love with the journey and not the number on the scale. This journey was more mental than physical.
How did you change your eating habits?
I started losing pounds by working out and changing my eating habits—smaller meals and counting calories. I then hit a plateau and decided I needed to change my diet even more because I was becoming comfortable. I became a pescatarian [vegetarian who eats seafood] and got a trainer.
I found workout regimes that worked for me, such as running at the trail and being outside in nature. This turned into a self-care regimen for me since I love being outdoors. I found ways to make working out fun, and I stopped looking at it as a task.
What did your workout routine consist of? How often did you work out?
I work out six days a week. I have a trainer I meet with 2/3 days a week. I also go to the gym three days a week and do group workouts the remainder of the days. My routine consists of cardio, weight training, and lots of resistance bands.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight? My starting weight was 305, and my current weight is 220.
What is your height?
I am 5’10”.
When did you start your journey? How long did your transformation take?
I started my journey two years ago. I would lose a significant amount of weight and gain it back. I began to give up again because I didn’t think I could do it. I began to believe that being in shape just wasn’t for me.
I changed my thought process seven months ago and decided to stop looking at the scale and focusing on numbers. I began to fix myself internally and appreciate the process. I stopped dieting and started to live healthily. It was then that I really started seeing physical changes in my body!
Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No. I lost weight 100% naturally.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
We look for secrets and shortcuts. There are none. We think that losing weight is just working out and seeing physical changes. WE ARE SO WRONG! This journey is spiritual. It is mental.
It is about how consistent and dedicated you can be. When you make those changes internally, the physical changes start to come. I realized that when I mess up, that’s part of the journey. I don’t plan to fix it the next day. I start over all again within that moment and learn from what I did wrong.
What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
Fall in love with the journey. When you mess up, appreciate it. You can learn from the mistakes and use them to make better choices. Praise yourself for the small successes. Make small goals and achieve them instead of focusing on long-term goals.
Girl, you are human! Give yourself a little grace and a pat on the back for even trying. The hardest part is getting up and making the decision to change. You can be anyone you desire to be in life once you get out of your own way, Sis!
