At the beginning of July, the Supercenter quietly announced it will be selling health insurance plans to customers. “We’re always looking for ways to help our customers save money and live better, and insurance services is one another way we do that,” Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove told CNBC.
This new business arm of the retail giant is called Walmart Insurance Services LLC, which currently has job postings listed online in order to fill insurance agent positions by the first week of August. “We need passionate health insurance professionals to help us build this new business from the ground up and achieve our mission,” the posting reads.
It’s not yet clear when Walmart’s new health insurance plans will be available to the public. Presumably, given the company’s reputation for offering discounted prices on common goods, these health insurance plans will be more affordable than standard plans. But, as of right now, information about pricing and the types of plans they will offer have yet to be disclosed.
It’s important to note that this isn’t Walmart’s first foray into healthcare. Earlier this year, the retail giant opened its own health centers, enabling customers to come in for $30 doctor checkups, $25 teeth cleanings, or mental health counseling at just $1 per minute. Overall, Walmart says the health services at these centers are about 40% cheaper than what you would pay at a conventional practice. (Currently, customers are provided information and education on outside insurance programs at these health centers.)
The announcement of this new Walmart health insurance initiative was made just before the retailer made it mandatory for all customers to wear face coverings while shopping, which encouraged many other major grocery stores to follow suit. On the corporate website, Dacona Smith and Lance de la Rosa, the chief operating officers of Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club, said wearing a mask is a “simple step everyone can take for their safety and the safety of others in our facilities.”
