Yinka lost 50 pounds. In 2010, she lost 90 pounds and maintained that success until 2019. She restarted her transformation journey in September 2020 after regaining 35 lbs. By using what she learned about nutrition and fitness she has created a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable long-term.

My name is Yinka, I’m from Chicago, and I’m 32 years old. I started my refreshed weight loss journey #2 in September 2020. The first one happened in 2010, and I lost 90 pounds. I maintained that victory through 2019. 

In September 2020, I got on the scale and saw that I’d gained 35 pounds. I was like, “Oh no, no, no, no, NO!” I immediately went from 0% activity and 0% healthy eating to 100% activity and 110% healthy eating! It was easy for me because I have absorbed SO MUCH knowledge over these ten years on how to lose weight, proper nutrition for different body types (macro and micronutrients), natural supplements, types of workouts, etc.).⠀

In a little over four months (9/1/2020 to 1/5/2021, to be exact!), I was able to lose 50 pounds in a healthy manner and with reasonable workouts! 

My “diet” is NOT a low carb diet. You truly don’t need things like keto or intermittent fasting. Those diets do give great results, but I was not willing to give up that much food. It’s not sustainable for me. I believe in a lifestyle change with longevity versus “dieting” and gaining the weight back. ⠀

Now, I’d like to go up from 165 pounds to 170 pounds. I want to build about 5 pounds of lean muscle. While doing that, I will be losing fat because that is the nature of muscle weight gain.

How did you change your eating habits?
I love pasta and pizza. Instead of eating the heavier carbs, I decided to replace my pizza crust with cauliflower pizza crust. I use cauliflower rice versus traditional rice. 

I also love sweets and sour sweets, like sour patch kids. I still give myself the grace to eat those things. Instead of beating myself up about it, I accept it as life (It is not realistic to assume that we will eat 100% clean 100% of the time). I do not eat them as much now because I’ve learned how to control my appetite through my weight loss program. When I do crave it, I give myself grace and just eat it. I choose to wake up the next day mentally prepared for a healthy day without the sweets. If I eat right 80% of the time, I can live a little 20% of the time.

What did your workout routine consist of?
My workouts are a mix of cardio and strength training. I do 20-30 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical and/or treadmill. Then, I do 20-30 minutes of upper/lower body strength training. I incorporate weights and kettlebells within my regimen three times a week. I’m able to achieve great results because I understand how my body (or a plus-size body) works and what max fat burn is for my body.

How often did you work out?
I worked out for five days a week the first two months and four days a week the following two months. Now I work out three days a week.

What was your starting weight in September? What is your current weight?
My starting weight in September was 215 pounds, and my current weight is 165 pounds. 

What is your height?
I am 5’8.5″.

What is the biggest lesson you have learned so far?
To achieve great success and longevity with your weight loss, you must be aligned mentally and spiritually. The weight falling off is just one of the smaller benefits in the grand scheme of living a holistic, healthy lifestyle (physically, mentally, and spiritually). As I was diligent in taking things day by day and working out, I was also diligent in keeping my mind and faith walk in a constantly growing and healing state.

What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight?
Ladies, It is not impossible to lose 20+ pounds. Being healthy should not be a burden. The way to switch that negative way of thinking off is to take your weight loss journey a day at a time. 

Do you want to lose 70lbs? What can you do tomorrow to make progress towards that goal? What about the next day? Start with that mindset. Celebrate yourself every day that you accomplish something. The next thing you know, you’ll look back, and that 70lbs will be long gone! The end date no longer matters.
