Zakiya lost 43 pounds by changing her eating habits and working out 4-5 days a week. She was tired of stress eating, and she was tired of how weight had affected her life since elementary school. Her goal was simply to be fit and healthy.

What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?
I was always a stress eater. I began my weight loss journey with a sky-high goal: to be fit. I honestly had no idea how I could accomplish this, but I was determined. 

I have struggled with my weight from elementary school to my adult life. Many things happened during those years that could be a trigger to lose weight — from having someone I was in a relationship with complain about my weight to having pictures of me posted on the internet because of my weight. Also, I could not ride certain theme park rides because I couldn’t fit on the ride at a theme park. One day, I just thought, “I want to live a long life! I’m tired of lacking the energy to just walk for five minutes.”

How did you change your eating habits?
I stopped drinking a carton of Minute Maid juice each day. I stopped eating late at night and limited my carb intake. Now I eat more protein and healthy fats.

How often do you workout?
I go to the gym four or five days a week. 

What was your starting weight? What is your current weight?
My starting weight was 230 pounds, and my current weight is 187 pounds.

What is your height?
I’m 5’2″.

When did you start your journey?
May 2020

How long did your transformation take?
Nine months 

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey?
No 

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
I learned how to make this a lifestyle change. Many times in the past, I did things just to lose a quick 5 pounds, but I then gained it right back. This time is different. 

What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?

  • Have a cheat day sometimes 
  • Downsize Your Dinnerware: Serve your meals on smaller plates, and it can help you eat less.
